MPE, in collaboration with leading aluminium packaging associations, has developed the Design for Recyclability Guidelines and Recyclability Assessment for Packaging containing Aluminium. This initiative supports the implementation of Article 6 of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates that all packaging be recyclable and requires the European Commission to define recyclability criteria and performance grades by 2028.
A joint initiative from MPE, EAFA (European Aluminium Foil Association), the Aluminium Closures Group, AEROBAL (International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers), ETMA (European Tube Manufacturers Association), and European Aluminium (EA), the guidelines were drafted by the cyclos-HTP Institute.
MPE CEO Krassimira Kazashka highlighted the importance of the initiative: “Aluminium is a proven circular and permanent material, uniquely positioned to help Europe meet its circular economy goals. These guidelines are a practical step toward ensuring that aluminium cans remain a valuable resource of secondary material and a champion of high-quality recycling.”
The guidelines are aligned with PPWR requirements and infrastructure standards and are designed to support packaging designers, policymakers, and recyclers in making informed decisions that enhance circularity.
